Not only did Vielle obtain all the achievements in a quick setting at the time, including obtaining 2 hidden achievement cars, the Party Sleigh and the Shadow XMaxx Tree, but he would also set a session record that surpassed CarriePirc's at the time, having done more than 780+ races. What set it apart was the sudden addition of an unannounced new event to the site, called the 2012 Xmaxx Event. However, on one November day, Vielle inadvertently was going for a major session. During the first few months he seldom played the game, having only had slight bouts of activity during October 2012 and picking it up in November 2012, having completed his first 100+ session achievements. Vielle started out typing 70 WPM and quickly doubled his speed within a year of playing. Vielle joined the site in August 2012 after a friend told him to play Nitro Type as a detraction from TypingWeb (now ), where Nitro Type was advertised and featured, as his friends wanted to see how fast he was at the time.
If you convince consumers that the temporary delay they’re experiencing now is a necessary exchange for the services they want from you, they’ll wait far more happily. Even so, human brains are built to crave rewards. Most people don’t enjoy the experience of standing in line. Lines exist because of scarcity in the face of demand. You have a product your customers want, but limited time, space, and personnel to deliver services to clients. When people are lining up, you’re on the right path. What’s the speed at which servers complete requests? Can we increase this?.How many customers are showing up? How quickly are they arriving?.The reality of customer service, however, presents far more questions than how to satisfy demand. Such a straightforward two-party transaction sounds simple enough. The delivering party, aka companies/supply.The requesting party, aka consumers/demand.How many lines and operators do you need for a smooth service? What are the factors deciding this?Īt the end of the day, Erlang decided queuing theory mostly centered around two parties: Erlang invented queuing theory in 1909 through observing the Danish Telephone Exchange and searching for a more efficient way to operate them. The more desirable the resources, the more customers are willing to wait in line.ĭanish engineer A.K. Lining up was born from excess demand and low supply. His book The French Revolution describes people standing in “ Queues, or Tails…so that the first-come be the first served” while waiting for limited supplies of bread. Queuing was first recorded by Thomas Carlyle in 1837. Standing in line to wait your turn seems like such a natural action at this point, you might be surprised to learn it hasn’t been around for so long. Why Do We Queue? The History and Psychology Behind Lines Still queuing up to learn more about queues? Definitions and spellings are only the first stop. “Cue” also has nothing to do with lining up, since it refers to a signal to action and not waiting for your turn at the ATM. What does “qued” mean? Unless, you’re referring to the Old English term for the devil, probably not much. In fact, there are several common misspellings that might mislead anyone wondering what this term means. Queues get confusing sometimes, especially when you’re talking about spelling. This can be as simple as letting people line up and be served in that order in a retail business, or giving out numbers and pushing people toward individual customer service windows. Assigning them a spot in line is a better way of keeping customers organized for both them and the business. Everybody wants to be served on time and in order. In a business context, queues are about how you order and attend to customers. Standing in a first-come-first-served line to buy that band’s CD, on the other hand, is a classic queue. For someone or something to be queued means that there must be underlying order in the wait.Ī concert where everyone gets to jam along to the music at the same time doesn’t constitute a queue. Starting very simply, who or what is queued? And how are queues defined?Īccording to the most general definition, a queue is people or objects waiting their turn to be serviced. Fortunately, you won’t have to wait around this time to find out more about queuing. Unlike the winding line inside your local government agency, queues haven’t been around forever. What does queued mean? What is the history behind queuing up? How do you define queues? Is there a psychology behind something as simple as waiting in line? So how much do you really know about queuing? You need to have a thorough understanding of lining up if you want to improve how you do business. But queuing is an essential part of the customer experience. Sure, you may understand what a line means when you see it. At this point, you only need to see a line stretching out before a store to immediately know there’s going to be a long wait. From cafeteria lunch lines to grocery store waits, people have been standing in lines their whole lives. How much do you know about waiting in line? The others are progressively more insoluble in water (K sp is 10 -10, 10 -13, and 10 -16 for AgCl, AgBr, and AgI), reflecting increasing covalency as Δχ decreases.Trending Questions How picric acid is strong acid? Science Chemistry 8.83 Construct a Born-Haber cycle for the formation of the hy- pothetical compound NaCl2, where the sodium ion has a 2+ charge (the second ionization energy for sodium is given in Table 7.2). Of these compounds, only AgF is soluble in water and should be thought of as an ionic compound. Our lattice energy calculation overestimates the ionic contribution in the case of the heavier silver halides, but underestimates the covalent contribution. It requires 769 kJ of energy to dissociate one mole of solid NaCl into separate gaseous Na + and Cl ions: NaCl(s) Na+(g) +Cl(g) H 769kJ (6.1.1) (6.1.1) NaCl ( s) Na + ( g) + Cl ( g) H 769 k J. The covalent bonding contribution to the lattice energies of AgCl, AgBr, and AgI makes these salts sparingly soluble in water.Īgain, we can interpret the fortuitous agreement between the calculated and experimentally obtained energies in terms of compensating errors. The strong electrostatic attraction between Na + and Cl ions holds them tightly together in solid NaCl. This reaction is used as a qualitative test for the presence of halide ions in solutions. Should we interpret the good agreement with values calculated from the ionic model to mean that these compounds are ionic? Clearly, this description is inappropriate for AgI, where the electronegativity difference Δχ is only 0.6 (compare this value to 0.4 for a C-H bond, which we typically view as non-polar).Ī drop of siver nitrate solution, when added to a dilute hydrochloric acid solution, results in the immediate formation of a white silver chloride precipitate. However we are still obtaining answers within about 12% error even for AgI. Looking at the table, we see that the error is small for AgF and becomes progressively larger for the heavier silver halides. It is interesting to repeat this exercise for the silver halides, which have either the NaCl structure (AgF, AgCl, AgBr) or zincblende structure (AgI). The errors in this case are only about 1% of E L. For example sodium chloride, NaCl, which is nothing but Na + and Cl. The table below shows results of more detailed lattice energy calculations for ionic fluorides in which the van der Waals term is explicitly included. anion anode cathode cation electron lattice energy negatively (-) charged. We can do better by explicitly including the short-range van der Waals attractive energy between ions. The two errors partially compensate, so the overall error in the calculation is small. Question: Which of the following compounds has the largest lattice energy NaCl CaCl2 RbCl MgCl2. If we underestimate the attractive energy of the crystal lattice, the energy minimization criterion ensures that the repulsion energy is underestimated as well. This problem has been solved Youll get a detailed solution from a subject matter expert that helps you learn core concepts. This is because we used energy minimization to obtain the repulsion energy in the Born-Mayer equation. The result is promising because we neglected the van der Waals term.īut.how did we get away with neglecting the van der Waals term? Here we have to subtract 2RT to convert our cycle of energies to a cycle of enthalpies, because we are compressing two moles of gas in making NaCl(s) and PΔV = ΔnRT, where Δn = -2.Įxperimentally ΔH f for NaCl is -411 kJ/molīecause all the other numbers in the cycle are known accurately, the error in our calculation is only about 15 kJ (about 2% of E L). when you're not limited to cardinal directions, there are a lot of new interesting rhythms to play with!

Sometimes they’ll change their nocturnal habits and feed in daylight hours during the winter, to take advantage of warmer temperatures. Opossums will den for a few days to escape the cold, but they don’t hibernate. Their tails often appear stumpy or as if something had bitten them off, but these are signs that their tails suffered frostbite. Many opossums bear physical evidence of surviving harsh winters – damaged ears and tails. In fact, their tails (and ears) are hairless, making them particularly susceptible to frostbite and even hypothermia. Unlike some other mid-sized mammals that thrive in the presence of humans – think raccoons, red foxes, coyotes – opossums don’t have furry, protective tails. It’s much less well adapted to winter weather. It’s particularly well adapted to humanity, able to survive amidst farms, city parks and suburbs. My parents tell me they have not seen the Carolina wrens this week, not a promising sign. According to Great Backyard Bird Count reports, it can be ten years or more until Carolina wrens return to northern states in numbers following a cold weather die-off. The Carolina wren population eventually expands northwards again. In years with very cold weather, Carolina wren sightings diminish greatly - the birds have died off, and their range contracts. This pattern has been recorded by the Great Backyard Bird Count, a citizen science initiative held each February where participants keep track of birds seen in backyards or nearby parks. Since they don’t migrate, they often perish. However, these birds don’t fare well during periods of very cold weather. They are not migrants: they live in a locale year round. Indeed, Carolina wrens have been expanding their range north over the past decades. They’re also somewhat unfamiliar to me: growing up, we’d never see them around the yard. They’re fun birds to observe, always active and vocal. While visiting my parents and brother in central Pennsylvania over the holidays, I enjoyed watching the antics of the Carolina wrens visiting their bird feeders. When a cold snap occurs, they’re ill prepared for it. There are species, though, that have recently expanded their range due to climate change or other factors. (Heinrich’s book Winter World is a treasure trove of stories of how animals survive the cold). Naturalist Bernd Heinrich reports flying squirrels cramming into small tree holes, huddling together in a tight mass for warmth. Others have thick layers of fat or lush fur that helps them stay warm and dry.īirds will seek out a variety of unconventional shelters – both natural and human-made – to stay warm on bitterly cold nights. Other wild animals have evolved ingenious ways of conserving energy, including hibernation, torpor and other physiological changes. Creatures like Arctic foxes, with frostbite-proof feet, are exquisitely adapted for Arctic environments. Many animals, of course, are well adapted to thrive in even the coldest of temperatures. It can be equally miserable for some wildlife species. Much of the eastern and southern United States is dealing with frigid temperatures and bracing for a “bomb cyclone,” creating miserable conditions for people. Sweetie tells Everest & Skye that she thought the princess was saving her from the streets after she was separated from her parents and friends before finding out it was her who invaded her home. They noticed her voice changed and she reveals it's her real voice and her accent was fake, saying the princess forced her to speak like that.
